Last Friday I was talking to a colleague of mine and he asked me how I decide what to focus on in my business.

The answer – which I share in the video below- surprised me in a good way.

I know that deciding where to focus our time, energy and resources can be tricky in business and yet it can be simpler when we reconnect with what matters most to us.

I share my insights on the video here:

Below is a recap of the 5 criteria I share in the video:

1. Inspiration: Are you inspired by what you are doing?

So often when we create something, we do it because we feel obligated to create it, we feel we “have” to do it in order to make money. But what if we have the cart before the horse on this?  Because creativity is fueled by inspiration and inspired action. So what if, instead of asking yourself what you should do or what you have to create to make money, you asked yourself what you feel INSPIRED to create instead? It’s a much more expansive energy and you may have a lot more fun and make more money by choosing what inspires you. And chances are that if it inspires you, it will likely inspire your clients as well.

2. Joy: Does the idea of creating this project feel joyful?

What if every choice you made in your business you ran through the “joy filter”? By this I mean, if it doesn’t feel joyful to create, then it’s a no.  I’m really experimenting with my willingness to courageously live in the space of 100% hell yeses and joy is a huge part of this. Joy is a very high vibration that’s magnetic so what if you tapped into and operated from the energy of joy to create in your life and in your business? What could change?  And what if you were committed to enjoying the process as much as the end result?  It’s all still energy and the energy you infuse into the creation process is still present in the final product.

3. Alignment: Does this project align with my lifestyle and income goals?

Basically, does what you are saying yes to feel congruent with the bigger vision of what you want to create for yourself financially and impact-wise? Once again, this is an opportunity for you to really examine “why” you are choosing what you are choosing and to consciously choose instead of creating by default or out of fear.

4. Stay light: Ask yourself: “Does this ___ feel light or heavy?”

Lightness is always your Truth and will always create more lightness. Heaviness is always a lie and will always feel heavy.  The lightness may not always feel logical or timely (I give the example in the video that I didn’t plan on writing a book now but it feels light to do so).  If you do nothing else but commit to creating with lightness, I wonder what magical creations you will unleash into the world.

5. Feelings: How do I want to feel in my business?

Write down the  top 3 adjectives to describe how you want to feel in your business and then follow through on the projects that align with how you want to FEEL in your business in the next 90 days.  If you want to feel spacious, perhaps a massive launch may not be in alignment.  You can choose what is a “hell yes” for you. What can make choosing YOU in your business easy and fun moving forward?
