I remember walking down a NYC street on a carefree humid July day when I was fifteen. I was wearing a tank top and shorts and this guy who was walking towards me said “Wow! Those are some thunder thighs.”

I was still fairly new to the US so I didn’t understand what that comment meant at first. I asked around at school and from that moment on, I knew that my thighs, were no longer a “safe place to be in”.

I felt immediate shame and highly self-conscious. I felt compelled to “do something to shrink those thighs down immediately.”

The ongoing yo-yo diet syndrome went into full force at the time.

Flash forward to early this year.

I was talking to a client and I began to secretly weep on the phone with her. She is an accomplished woman in her later years. A few injuries led to some unwanted weight and a few other aches and pains that she’s ready to address now.

As we spoke, I heard some familiar phrases:

  • I try to have more willpower but sometimes I just cave in (meanwhile she’s lost over 60 pounds on her own!)
  • I love food but at my age I just cannot eat the way I used to before (she’s eating lettuce & protein every night).
  • I am just SO tired ALL the time. I come home and just plop on the couch and fall asleep.
  • I guess I HAVE to do this.

I paused and asked her:

“You don’t HAVE to do anything. My question is do you WANT to do this?”

“More specifically do you think that you DESERVE to do something good for yourself?”

She paused for a long moment and remarked:

“I guess I never thought about it that way. I always put myself LAST.”

I began to cry in that moment. I had such deep compassion for her.

She was echoing a sentiment I have heard from so many wonderful women I’ve met in my life.

She’d stopped honouring herself and putting herself first.

As women we are powerful, powerful beings. We are truly beautiful beyond measure AND we are givers, lovers, creators, mothers, sisters, daughters, and often conditioned to give before receiving.

Through years of conditioning, we are often wired to see all the faults and tweaks we need to make to our body instead of acknowledging its magnificence.

It took me a really long time to really get this.

Feeling beautiful isn’t about a number on the scale or on the back of a clothing tag. Beautiful is how we value and honour ourselves on a moment to moment basis.

Feeling beautiful is about embracing the magnificence that already exists within you.

This includes the stretch marks, the pooch belly, the little cellulite bumps.

It ALSO includes: your gorgeous eyes, your shapely legs, your sexy shoulders, your shiny hair, your glowing skin, your incredible smile and let’s not forget your inner beauty:  your spunk, your brilliance, your voice, your desires, your passions, your sensuality.

It’s time we honoured ourselves FULLY.

After I got off the phone with my client I was both heartbroken and frankly … Pissed off.

We have become so conditioned to comparing ourselves to unrealistic models of beauty that it’s warped our sense of self.

It’s time we took back our power.

It’s time that we embrace our magnificent beauty: inner and outer.

In all your glory, I just wanted to remind you today of how AMAZING you really are.

Mag-ni-fi-cent. Glo-ri-ous. Spectacular.

All of you and JUST the WAY you are.

Lean into YOU.

Appreciate, honour, be grateful for you in this world.

You are here for a reason…

Probably a TON of them.

Our bodies are the vessel through which we bring our brilliance to the world.

It’s your inner beauty, your intrinsic VALUE that no person, situation or thing can ever take from you. So embrace it via @sweetpathgirl {tweet it}.
