I’ve always loved the limelight.
When I was 8 years old, my mother found me standing on a soap box in the playground talking to a crowd of other children.
When I was 9, I would dance at my friend’s birthday parties with reckless abandon until I was wiped out. No inhibition.
Then puberty hit and I became shy and afraid.
There were the dimples on my thighs.
There was my British accent – which while people loved – made me feel out of place and like an outsider.
I started to believe that what I had to say didn’t matter.
Now – flash forward to the early years in my business.
I still loved the spotlight deep inside.
But in practice – I was terrified of being seen. The fear of being judged, criticized and ostracized were very, very scary.
It stopped me in my tracks in fact.
This is how my fear of being seen showed up on a daily basis for me:
1) I felt fat when I looked in the mirror and was afraid I was going to be judged for being out of alignment with my message and deemed a “fraud”.
Bottom line: I perpetuated a cycle of hiding and “waiting” until I felt ready which never came.
2) I felt shy and out of place in social settings so I didn’t speak about what I did to others and rarely raised my hand to ask a question or to make a contribution.
Bottom line: By not sharing my brilliance, I didn’t magnetize new clients that I could serve or lucrative new partnerships.
3) I was often intimidated to speak to other people who I deemed to be more successful than me. While I secretly wanted to play in “their league”, I was afraid they’d see through my insecurities and recognize how much of a “fraud” I felt like in my business.
Bottom line: I missed out on creating new relationships that could lead to helping more people.
4) In my relationships, I was often afraid of speaking up for myself and sharing my truth because I thought I would be criticized, ostracized and punished.
Bottom line: I tolerated a lot of B.S. from family, romantic partners and friends and pleased others before myself.
5) I shied away from going to networking events, pitching myself for speaking events and only attended social parties where I felt “safe” and knew people.
Bottom line: I lost thousands of dollars in new business.
Then I did the work to move past these blocks because:
- My business had completely stagnated.
- I got REALLY scared of not living my purpose.
- I got REALLY scared that I would die with my dream inside me.
- I got FED UP of living in FEAR all the time.
I had to figure this out.
So today I’ve come out on the other side and life looks very different for me now:
- I network on a weekly basis and I consistently bring in new business from it
- I am pitching myself to speak at local business and spiritual events in NYC
- I did a boudoir shoot and have shared that story with thousands of women who are also ready to be seen and to own all of themselves
- I have increased my income significantly
- I have created powerful new alliances in my business because I show up confidently in owning my value
- I have spoken my truth in relationships and release friendships that don’t align with me anymore
- I show up knowing that I look the “part” of someone who owns her value and who has a LOT to offer the right clients
These shifts felt impossible not too long ago.
But I did the work.
I looked at my fears and the ENORMOUS COST they had on my life.
